50 Tons Of Cargo From Waikouaiti Reach Bluff
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] INVERCARGILL, This Day. Approximately 50 tons of cargo salvaged from the stranded steamer Waikouaiti was landed at Bluff last night. It consisted principally of Australian wines, a large number of ingots of tin, chests of tea, cases of electrical goods, cases of Japanese silk goods, and various sundries. Ship Working Badly. It is now reported that water found its way into No. 3 hold, and the ship is working badly. Her list has increased, and the foremast is working ominously. A man with a wide engineering experience, who visited the ship on Thursday, said ft was unfortunate that the necessary insurance regulations appeared to have delayed salvage operations for two whole days, each of which had been ideal for the job. The weather is cold and a nor’-east wind is blowing this morning, but it is expected that salvage work will continue today, when an attempt will be made to work the ship by steam.
