Vegetable Garden
Sowings of practically all vegetables may still be made. Make successive sowings of green peas, dwarf beans, etc. Plant out kumera and tomato plants. Spray potatoes with Bordeaux Mixture. Spray onions for mildew; use lime-sulphur, 1 in 70. Give marrows, pumpkins, etc., thorough waterings during dry spells. Pinch out the tips of the vines when they have run 3 or 4ft. This vVill encourage lateral growths, and save space. Lettuce may be sown every two or three weeks in shallow trenches in good, rich soil.
Cabbages and cauliflowers should be planted where they can be conveniently hosed. Keep beans and peas picked _as they reach the picking stage. Nothing is so exhausting to plants as allowing pods to ripen. Plant out celery for later crops. ; Sow broccoli for use in winter and spring. Land that has carried early potatoes may be used for growing winter greens, or for kumaras. Tomatoes that are setting fruit should be sprayed with arsenate of lead to kill caterpillars. Spray peaches, plums and nectarines for brown rot. Use limesulphur solution, 1 in 120.
