Sequel To Sea, Air, Land Attacks By Russia
FINNS MOVE FOR ARMISTICE
(Received 2.30 p..m.) LONDON. November 30. r pHE PRESIDENT OF FINLAND (M. KALLIO) HAS DECLARED A STATE OF WAR. Although Russian air, land and sea forces launched simultaneous attacks on Finland at, 9.5 a.m. local time. Russia still refuses to acknowledge invasion. 'The frontier bombardment, however, is increasing. The compulsory evacuation of Helsingfors will probably be ordered. Large numbers of people are already leaving. Reports of fighting are very scanty, but Russians are stated to have occupied various sections of the frontier. The damage to Helsingfors from bombs is extensive. The Polytechnic College, one of the city’s linest buildings, has been destroyed. Several large blocks of flats were wrecked. Most bombs fell in the south-west quarter of the city, where an area embracing 12 streets is ablaze. Windows arc shattered for a radius of a mile. It is unofficially estimated that several hundred were killed and wounded in a raid at 2.45 p.m, that lasted 15 minutes. Members of the Soviet Legation staff are still in the city. It is believed that they will be held as hostages until the Finnish legation staff in Moscow has returned.
