Cement Co. Extending Plant at Portland, Waro
An extensive programme of plant modernisation is being carried out by Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement Coy., both at the works and' at Hikurangi. The crushing plant almost completed at Waro, will be one of the largest in the Dominion, the jaws being 42in by 31in.
Ample supplies of limestone for many years to come are available, but the rock is now being worked at a lower level than on the railway. The purpose of the present installation is to enable crushing of the rock on the spot, instead of transportation of the whole bulk to Portland.
The limestone will be reduced to 4in diameter at Waro and railed to Portland for final crushing. It is expected that the crushing plant will be in operation within four or five weeks.
At Portland, where a major programme of plant improvement was commenced three years ago, additional storage bins and an additional pack house are about half completed. The crusher will be driven by a 130 h.p. crude oil burning Diesel engine.
