Mummy Cloth May Be Made In Australia
CANBERRA, Friday
The cloth with which they ancient Egyptians swathed their mummies, several thousand years ago, may be manufactured in Australia.
It is made from ramie, a fibre which has eight times the tensile strength of other fibres used in making fabrics.
Unsuccessful efforts to grow flax in Australia have been followed by experiments in ramie culture, in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland.
Results are stated to have been encouraging, and large scale development is planned.
Officials of the Supply and Development Department and the New South Wales Government conferred on the project.
It was stated recently that there were prospects of an export trade, and that a complementary secondary industry would pi’obably be established in a northern river town in New South Wales.
The value of the projected industry ;o Australia is estimated at £1,000,000 i year. Northland is' said to be suitable for ;he growing of ramie.
