Maori Pioneer Battalion May Be Revived
WELLINGTON, This Day
The possibility of a revival of the Maori Pioneer Battalion was mentioned by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, when the Army Estimate was under discussion.
Mr Jones, in answer to a question by Mr Tirikatene (GovernmentSouthern Maori), said he had received many representations recently for suck a step, and at present he was consulting his officials on the matter.
The Ht. Hon. J. G. Coates said a number of Maoris had already joined the ordinary forces, and some platoons composed of Maoris suggested the revival of the old "battalion. It would interest the Maori people deeply to know that the Minister would give favourable consideration to such a step. Mr P. K. Paikea thanked the Minister for his statement, and said he had had numerous requests for the formation of a Maori battalion.
