Australians Rush of to Enlist

SYDNEY, This Day,

Thousands of men of all ages gathered at the Victoria Military Barracks yesterday, desiring to enlist for military duty. Officials were compelled to inform applicants that there is at present no call for general service, but former ex-servicemen wore invited to join the army reserve through the Returned Soldiers’ League. A similar eagerness to serve is reported in other States. The examination of all visiting vessels is no wbeing carried out at all ports.

A shot was fired across the bows of a coastal vessel entering Port Phillip, Victoria, this morning.

The captain was ignorant of the emergency regulations, and did not immediately heave-to. Germans, Austrians Rounded Up Police and military officers during the night and early in the morning carried out a round of rounding-up of Germans and Austrians for internment in country gaols. Most of those taken submitted quietly. Others were sullen and seemied to anticipate the round-up, while a few were resentful. Some possessed revolvers and considerable sums of money. The police had the fullest information regarding the activities and movements of those with pronounced Nazi tendencies compiled from departmental dossiers.

A Montreal message states that members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police made scores of arrests of German citizens under the Enemy Aliens Act throughout Sunday night and yesterday: •
