Housemaids’ Predicament

AUCKLAND, This Day.

Suspended in a lift between the fourth and fifth floors of the Hotel Auckland on Saturday morning, three housemaids received a severe shock when a fire broke out, the lift stopping between the two floors. > : One girl fainted, but the two others screamed for help, bringing members of the staff to their assistance'.

The lift gates were opened,. and- the girls wore assisted out on to the landing on the fifth floor.

The fire was suppressed- by the time the brigade arrived. A short circuit in the electrical wiring caused . the outbreak, but little damage was dene.

Browned In Bath.—A Fonsonby resident, Mrs Alice Melinda Chapman, aged 54. was found drowned in a bath in a house at Ctahuhu yesterday afternoon. She had been on a visit to Iriends and on the return of one of the occupants she was found in the bath, apparently having been dead for some time. An inquest was opened. l
