Help the Orphanage

THERE is every reason to expect that in the near future Whangarei will possess an orphanage which will be unique in many respects. In the first place, the institution will be the tangible expression of the philanthropy of an old resident of Whangarei who, wishing to perpetuate the memory of a son whom he lost in the long ago, has made possible the erection of a home where children who have lost their parents may spend their earliest days under conditions which will not only give them comfort, but fit them to take their place in the world. The philanthropist, who insists upon anonymity, first purchased an area of land at Tikipuuga, and then, some years later, made a magnificent monetary gift, the interest upon which would provide for the running costs of an orphanage. Great as were these gifts, the donor has added further grants to enable the building to be erected free of debt. In this particular matter the “Advocate” has been keenly interested, the efforts of Kupe and the Young NortWanders having resulted in the raising of a very considerable sum. A board of trustees has rendered valuable service in the important preliminary work, as may be learned from an inspection of the building activities so far completed. Much, however, remains to be done, and the trustees have obtained the assistance of a committee of local ladies, who, in turn, have called a public meetingin order that those members of the public who wish to help forward a most deserving movement may be able to share in the activities. This meeting is to be held on Thursday afternoon next, and we would warmly commend it to our readers. The Whangarei Orphanage will be an outstanding example of philanthropy, and all who can do so should be proud of association with it.
