’Change Opens Quietly
[Special to "IVort hern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, Monday. A fresh week opened quietly on the ’Change and at the first call recorded business was continued to two reported sales. One was of Broken Hill Proprietaries, which at 68/9 showed a drop of 1/- on last week's figures, the -other being of Mt. Lyells, which at 27/9 showed a drop of 3d. There Was a slackening in the demand for Australian industrials. Buyers shaded their offers for several issues, and there were no inquiries for either of the Electrolytic Zinc issues or A.C.L’s. In the banking section, Commercials were easier, with quotations from 16/7 to 16/9, and New Zealand's were steady between 38/9 and 39/3. Dalgety’s shares were asked for at £6 4/-, and Goldsbroughs at 28/-. Government stocks had a firm inquiry for all issues with the exception of the 1953-57 3£ per cents., which were quoted, ex-interest, with best buyers at £BB and no sellers. In the unlisted section, Whakatane Paper Mill scrip was easier, the ordinary shares being on offer at 4/7, and the preferential at 10/6, with no buyers in either case. Sales 'completed at the noon call today were: Taranaki Oilfields, 6/6; Woolworths (Sydney), £l/4/-; W. R. Carpenter, £2/4/6.
