Plane’s Emergency Landing

An emergency landing on a small flat at Tira Ora, in the heart of the hill country of Pelorus Sound, was made yesterday morning by a Tiger Moth aeroplane belonging to the Middle District (Manawatu) Aero Club. No one was injured, and as far as is known the machine is undamaged, and may be flown out after being transferred by water to a suitable field. The pilot, Mr W. Howell, of Palmerston North, with Miss Mabel Page as passenger, left Wellington yesterday morning for Nelson. He encountered a heavy fog, and decided that ft was unwise to proceed. Their attention attracted by the sound of the machine’s approach, settlers in the vicinity were astonished to see the aeroplane circling as Ihe pilot sought a place to land.
Mr Howell decided to put the machine down on the property of Mr R. D. Black, of Tira Ora, about 20 miles from Havelock. There was httle flat land in the neighbourhood, but the pilot made a successful landing. Miss Page proceeded by launch to Havelock, and completed the journey to Nelson by car.
