The Right Hon. W. M. Hughes, who has stated that an Australian who is not prepared to defend Australia is not fit to enjoy its protection, is one of the outstanding members of the Federal Government. A Welshman who has spent the greater part of his life in Australia, Mr Hughes has long since made a name for himself as an orator and statesman. He was Prime Minister of Australia in the days of the Great War, and played a notable part in the negotiations which culminated in the Treaty of Versailles.
