Waiharara School Banquet And Ball

[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] KAITAIA, This Day.

The third annual school banquet and ball was held in the Waiharara Hall on Saturday evening, when 'there was a very large attendance of children, parents and visitors from all parts of the northern districts.

At 5.30 p.m. the children assembled and were entertained at a banquet by the school committee.,

The following toasts were honoured: “The King,” “The School Committee.” (Walter Yelavich —Mr E. Wattridge); “The Staff” (Branco Yelavich —Mr T J. Haughton); “Parents and Helpers” (Bryne Shine —Mrs E. Wattridge); “Prizewinners” (Violet Yelavich —Miiika Matijevich); “Absent Friends and Ex-Pupils” (Joey Babich —Zorika Hrstich and Philip Steed).

The toast master was Walter Yelavich.

At the conclusion of the banquet the children entertained the parents with a delightful collection of part songs, poems and plays, followed by a selection of folk dances, whic|i in-

eluded “Lady Speller,” “Bonnets So Blue,” “I See You,” “Tripping Dance,” “Epping Forest,” “Running Dance,” “Niggers’ Barn Dance,” and “Polonaise.”

Successful Pupils

The children’s part of the evening was brought to a close with the presentation of trophies won throughout the preceding year. The winners of the major awards were:

Junior boys’ athletic championship, Steve Matijevich; junior girls’ championship, Maudie Salle; intermediate boys’ athletic championship, Ivan Katavich; girls, Rosy senior boys’ athletic championship, Philip Steed; girls, Zorika Hrstich. The championship cup for the Far North inter-schools’ sports was accepted on behalf of the school by Rosy Salle.

Later the adults took the floor and a most enjoyable evening of dancing was passed to the strains of music by Owen Price’s swing time band. Mr E. Wattridge was M.C.
