In the case in which Walter Todd, carrier, of Picton, claimed £2OOO from the Railways Department for the loss of a leg, the jury awarded the full amount after a retirement of under half an hour.
Judgment was delivered today by the Court of Appeal in the case brought by Leslie Towns against the sentence of seven years’ imprisonment and a flogging imposed by the Supreme Court in Christchurch on May 12 last, upon his conviction on a charge of indecent assault on a female. Sir Michael Myers, the Chief Justice, said that the mental condition of the prisoner was not brought to the notice of the trial Judge, who now agreed that the flogging should be cancelled.
