Well-Fought Match At Portland
With both teams on their toes, and at full strength, the City-Portland
match, won by City 11—3, proved more than interesting. City had the advantage of weight in the pack, and their roving forwards harried the opposition unceasingly. The Payne brothers shone well in the tight, with good support from Vaughan and Hirtzel. Tom Hollows went great guns all the way, and paved the way for City’s tries. W. Murray played a captain’s game throughout, and his best support came from D. Parkes, who scored a typical nve-eighths’ try. On the wing, J. Chetharm recently promoted junior, showed much promise, and his try was an excellent piece of work. Bradley apparently left his kicking boot at home, but Parkes filled in the gaps. Phil Child, full-back, gets a lot of work, the men in front being content to lean on him. Were they to do their part, a noticeable improvement* should result.
