rr HE FIRST AUCKLAND LEAGUE TEAM TO INVADE NORTHLAND * THIS SEASON, NEWTON SENIO KS, PROVIDED A THRILLING GAME AT JUBILEE PARK ON SATURDAY WHEN IT MET A PORTLANDKIKURANGI COMBINED TEAM. The visitors won 28 to 20 in a fast- scoring, swift-paced game that was the best seen at the park for some time. Plaving together as a team for the first time, the local men were baffled by the visitors’ combination and experience in the first spell, which closed with the score 16—0 in Newton's favour. • , ■ With the Northlanders rallying to fighting pitch and Newton making several careless mistakes, the second half was a different story, and the closing stages found the city men fully extended to save the game. , , The match was a prelude to Northland’s visit to Auckland in June., when it will meet Taranaki at Carlaw Park, giving both teams a chance to show their claims for representation in, the New Zealand team to leave for England and France in July.

Visitors Score Early. < Combined kicked off and Newton set the ball rolling at a fast clip with hard football, opening up the game at every opportunity.
