Mr, Savage Appeals To Employers And Workers

"When it comes to tin tacks, our job is to sec to it that the income of the great mass of the people is nearly enough equivalent in value to the value of their production," said the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, when he addressed the workers and management of J. Edwards and Sons Ltd., manufacturers of wooden heels, saddle-trees, pegs and skewers, after inspecting the company’s factory yesterday afternoon. Service to Country.

Employers and workers alike, said Mr. Savage, had a service to render to the country. He asked them to do better than they had over done before.

Democracy meant giving as well as taking, and this was something to be remembered In the big job of increasing New Zealand’s production.

“We are not satisfied to milk cows, however necessary that may bo,” said Mr. Savage.

“There are other people working in New Zealand besides those on farms, and we are asking them to do better (ban ever before.

“We promise them that their extra effort wall be reflected in their incomes, for if that is not done we are wasting our time.” His remarks were applicable to workers and employers alike, added Mr. Savage.

Unless the employers had some guarantee of security, some guarantee that their increased risks were,going to mean increased incomes, they were not going to be asked to take those increased risks.
