Moerewa Show Prospects

Outstanding feature of the second annual Moerewa Show to be held on Saturday is the first competition for the Northland Porker Championship.

Destined to be the premier contest of its kind in New Zealand,• the com’ petition has attracted no less than 139 prime porker carcases for its initial year, entries coming from as far south as Warkworth and from throughout the rest of the North.

The pigs were killed at the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company Ltd.’s works seven weeks ago.

For the benefit of farmers and the general public who wish to inspect the carcases, Saturday will be a field day at the works from 10 a.m. till noon.

Entries substantially above those of the initial show last year have come forward in all other sections. Big Horse Entries.

“Horses are coming from everywhere to compete in the hunting classes,” said the secretary, Mr A. E. J. Corr, yesterday. “All horses which competed last year will be here again, together with

many newcomers.” There are three cups to be won outright in this section. These are for lady’s hack, maiden hunter and the open hunter’s competition.

Jersey Group Competition

Another innovation is the Jersey group competition open to suppliers to the Bay of Islands Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd., and for which a cup has been presented by the company. The group includes four classes—bull, cow, two-year-old and heifer — and exhibitors must enter in all four classes. The bull must be a pedigree and the cows either pedigree or grade Jerseys. Excellent support has been received for this initial effort, while good entries are being received in the open Jersey sections and other classes of stock.

Good competition is also coming forward in the pigs and fat sheep classes.

Public Entertainment

More attractions than usual are offered for the entertainment of the public at Moerewa Show.

In addition to the ring events, which, apart from the jumps, will include bare-back riding and a stockmen’s competition, there will be competitions for motor-car drivers, Maori hakas and pois, tug-of-war events and wheelbarrow races, and several classes for children.

These latter will include a fancy dress parade, and classes for decorated tricycles and trollies. Improvements to Grounds.

Moerewa’s first show last year netted a profit of £BO. This creditable sum has been put back into the show in the form of improvements to the grounds and increased prize-money. An outstanding feature has been the £II,OOO worth of improvements to the grounds at Simson Park and the election of a commodious hall for indoor exhibits, made possible by a subsidy from the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Co., Ltd,
