Mary Astor Won Contest and Success
Countless girls, through the motion picture years, have won beauty contests in their home towns and then, high with hope, descended upon Hollywood, only to learn that feminine loveliness is'ho novelty in the cinematic capital. So many of these contest winners have utterly failed to win even the slightest of picture recognition or opportunity that it has almost become a credo in the movies that such contest victories are more of ■ a liability than an asset. But exceptions prove the rule and Mary Astor, admittedly an exceptional person, is one of outstanding examples of a winning beauty contestant who attained screen stardom and then, through the years, ascended to even higher stellar heights.
Twentieth Century-Fox’s first musi- , cal picture for 1939 will be “Shooting High,” with Tony Martin, Joan Davis and Marjorie Weaver. <
