The American Kid
Wait Until Spring:, Bandini, by John Fante (Routledge, 7/6). This English republication ■ was, first of .all, an American sensation. It ran quickly up the lists of best-sellers and held on in public favour as the outstanding first novel of 1938. It is a true to life portrait of the typical American kid. Those who revel in Tom Sawyer, will delight in this more modern instance. Apart from the story interest, there is something to be gained by understanding and appreciating the American boy as a big step towards understanding the American adult. Most readers, with obscure notions about American life and thinking, will get some new light upon their problems from Fante’s story.
