American Public Apathetic (Received 1.30 p.m.) * NEW YORK, March 17. More or less immune now to further shocks in European development, the American public took Herr Hitler’s acquisition of Slovakia without surprise. There were some expressions of pity for “poor Czechoslovakia,” and wonderment at what would become of Czechoslovakia’s contemplated million dollar exhibit at the World’s Fair. Mr Sumner Welles, Under-Secretary for State, said that now this Germany is on the black list commercially, domestic producers, much of - whose manufactured goods were..formerly imported from Czechoslovakia, will benefit, otherwise there is little aggressiveness in expressions of regret concerning Czechoslovakia’s fate. ,Official comment still remains lacking.
New York Mayor’s Warnings,
The Mayor of New York, Mr La Guardia, noted for his hate of Herr Hitler, in a speech warned that Germany during the World War attempted to get Mexico to oppose the United States and promised portions of United States territory to Mexico in return. Mr La Guardia said that Germany, despite her expansion, still requires essential supplies from Latin America, and the United States must do the utmost in its power to stop German inroads there. Aeroplanes and munitions should be sold to Latin American countries under cost if necessary in order to assure United States dominance. Considerable interest was aroused in a leader in the London “Times” calling for a conference of democracies, but the reaction to it is apathetic. It is considered unlikely that American popular sentiment would approve United Stales participation since that would be considered entangling.
