Mr. Lyons Profoundly Disappointed
CANBERRA, March 17,
Profound disappointment and alarm at the events in Europe in the last few days were expressed by the Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, today. “We look into the future with deep misgivings,” he said.
“Hopes that nave been felt for the last few months that perhaps the way was opening to a renewed effort to regulate the relations of the Powers by methods of consultation and conciliation have received another setback. However, we need not regard what has happened as irreparable in its effect.
“Behind the acts of Governments in Europe today lies the earnest desire of the mass of the people of every country for peace, and it is on that foundation that the endeavours of all who are working to avoid the catastrophe of war will be continued.” Nazis Want Memel (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, March 17. It is reported from Kaunas, capital of Lithuania, that Dr. Newmann, Nazi leader in Memel, has sent a Note to the Lithuanian Government, in the form of an ultimatum, demanding independence for Memel.
