Tennis Tourney for Farmers First of its kind in Northland, a farmers’ tennis tournament is being held at the Mairtown courts 'on Monday. The organiser, Mr. A. D. King, of Mangapai, has already secured six entries, four ladies and four men comprising each team. Competing districts will be: Tangiteroria, Whatitiri. Mangapai, Maungakaramea, Purua and Matarau.

Whangarei High School Win Swimming.

The annual swimming match between Whangarei High School and Mt. Albert Grammar Scheel, held at the Mt. Eden baths resulted in a win for Whangarei by 34 points to 52. Official advice to this effect was telegraphed by the manager, of the team, Mr H. B. Massey, to Mr W. A. Given, who is in charge of swimming at the High School. « * ■■■ The Week’s Weather. More rain was recorded in Whangarei last week than for any period since January 29, but the total fall was only .38 of 'an inch, .35 of which fell on March 13. This did little more than temporarily refresh pastures, which, except on paspalum country, are bearing a very parched appearance. Dairy production is falling rapidly, 'and on some farms herds are being milked once a day only. During the past week there has been a noticeable drop in night temperatures, with heavy morning dews. The rainfall for the first half of March has been only .64 of an inch, following a total of .73 for February.

Territorials From Whangarei

Several local Territorials' have left Whangarei for the annual camp at Papakura, commencing tomorrow and continuing for a week. About 30 went from Whangarei, and about 40 from Dargaville. These numbers are larger than in previous years. In addition to the North Auckland Regiment, there will be present at the camp the Hauraki Regiment and the Waikato Regiment, making up the First Composite Infantry Battalion. Captain Wooller is adjutant in charge of the camp. * * • *

Bay of Islands Cricket,

The Bay of Islands subsidiary cricket competition for the Cotterill Cup will be commenced this 'Week-end, when the following" teamk will meet; —Kerikeri v. Moefewa; ' Ohaeawai v. Kawakawa; Rarigiahua v. Punalatere; Kaikohe v. Moehau.

Schools Close For Three Days. In order that Whangarei teachers may take part in the refresher; conference being held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, the local schools will be cloised. Similar conferences are being held throughout ‘ the province, the idea beirig to group together school teachers;"from the various districts'to discuss aspects of the profession in preparation for the work of the year. v # »!* ' “Leisure” Commercialised, Difficulty experienced by employers through their employees undertaking work for private individuals, and in some cases other employers, after their day’s work was done, or on Saturdays, was mentioned in the annual report of the New Zealand Coach and Motor Body Builders’ Association, considered by the association’s annual conference yesterday. “This abuse is, perhaps, partly due to the amended law'which reduced the weekly hours of employment on the pretence that greater leisure time would be available to workers,” the report stated.
