One Thousand Children in Bay School Sports

ANE THOUSAND CHILDREN TOOK PART IN THE BAY OF ISLANDS " SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP SPORTS AT OIIAEAWAI YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

The incidence of measles throughout Northland prevented the holding of last, year’s sports, but this year’s entries represent a big increase over those of the past.

Owing to the decreased number of schools through the consolidation policy, entries in the Grade 1 and 2 sections were lower than in previous years, but excellent numbers came forward in the Grade 3 and 4 divisions.

Secondary Schools.

For the first time in the history of the sports all four secondary schools in the Middle and Far North were represented, there being entries from Kawakawa, Kaikohe, Rawene and Kaitaia. All primary schools in the Bay of Islands area were represented. The Kaitaia contingent arrived at Kaikohe last night and were billeted among friends. That their long trip was, justified was shown by the fact that Kaitaia annexed both the boys’ and girls’ championship titles.

In Doubt To Last.

It was not until the last event of the day had been run that the secondary school points could be finalised. Kaitaia were leading Kawakawa by two points, but in the boys’ mile event Kawakawa filled all three places, to Show the way home by a 10-point margin. The race was run in 4min. 57secs. The sports, which were favoured with fine weather, were watched by a large gathering of parents and friends. The efforts of a hard-working band of officials saw a big programme handled with a minimum of delay.
