LONDON, March 16,
The “Daily Herald.” commenting on the European situation, says: “Let us face the fact, and the threat, because we can meet it only by intensification of our own measures of security, and by a determined policy of co-operation with France, Russia and the United States against the common danger to those principles of international justice and peace to which we all adhere.” The “News Chronicle” says: “The present climax shows the utter futility of. Mr Chamberlain’s policy towards Germany. Every sane person desires to see international differences settled by discussion instead of by force, but it is surely plain that Mr Chamberlain’s policy of retreating before an aggressor merely encourages him to further acts of aggression.” The “Daily Telegraph,” in an editoriol, criticises Mr Chamberlain’s statement that there is no reason to convict Herr Hitler of wilful bad faith.
“He pushed understatements to the point of irony when he said Herr Hitler’s action did not accord with the spirit of Munich,” the paper says. “That spirit is dead and buried. “Who can hope to appease a boa constrictor? Not a single neighbour of Germany’s henceforth will be safe from her deadly embrace. The Govexmment should abate its ‘sunshine talk,’ and substitute greater emphasis on vigilance.”
