Whangarei Stock Show Opens

Record Horse Events Hold Interest on Well Attended First Day

OAINT PATRICK’S BAY, DAWNING FINE AND CLEAR, ASSURED SUC- ° CESS FOR THE OPENING DAY OF THE WHANGAREI A. AND P. SOCIETY’S G3rd. ANNUAL SHOW.

Champions from all over the North, and a number from the Waikato, wero assembled at Kensington Park, where judging commenced shortly after 10 o’clock.

Despite the prolonged dry spell, longest in duration experienced by Northland for years, the stock has been brought forward in good condition, although in some classes there is a fa lling away in entries attributable to the hot weather. Notwithstanding this, the grand total of stock and horse entries is a record. The summary with the figures for 1938 in brackets is.—Pigs, 134 (179); sheep, 91 (92); dairy cattle, 148 (193); beef cattle, 25 (28); ponies, 269 (183); light horses, 228 (180); competitions, 50 (64); draught horses, 7 (29), As can be seen from the above, the improvement this year is largely attributable to greatly increased sup port for the horse classes, entries for which have never been surpassed at any Northland show. Riding, jumping and competitions held the interest of a particularly large first-day attendance at the park today. The ring events were the centre of attraction, while sideshows, well represented this year, drew a large quota of patrons.

Well displayed trade exhibits attracted much attention, and there was .always a crowd to be found admiring the newest mechanical devices. The special exhibit of noxious weeds and garden pests, staged in the totalisator house, was highly educational, both to farmers and' .amateur

gardeners. Judging of the Northland section of the National Bacon Pig championship, for which £250 cash and trophies is' offered- will take place tomorrow morning. >

Eacon Pig Championship.

With' less milk available owing to the dry: season, fewer pigs have been held to the baconer stage, but the entry of 6t pigs for the championship and for the general pig classes is very representative. • All told 308 sides of bacon from ..all parts of New. Zealand will be eligible for the greatest prize which the Dominiph offers to the pig breeder. ■ Over' 50 pigs will be judged on the Hoof in Whangarei tomorrow. Tenths of ’Jerseys have arrived from ‘as far north as Kaitaia, while mention was made yesterday of the Waiuku Shorthorns,, which were the first on the field at Kensington Park. The new vehicular entrance via sections oh Park Avenue, ,and giving direct access to ‘ the show ring, is greatly appreciated by patrons, and its full value will be apparent, when tomorrow’s record crowds assemble.

People’s Day Attractions.

thrilling indeed was the tractor rodeo staged foi: the first time in New Zealand this afternoon. The heavy farm “armaments” made theimanoeuvres over a “doctored” steeplechase course in which gum holes and pitfalls of all kinds abounded. .This event will be repeated at People’s Day tomorrow, at 11 a.m.-and again at 3.15 p.m. Another spectacular attraction for Saturday will be the chariot racing, for which post entries are being accepted^

The official opening of the show will take.place at 1.30 tomorrow, when the society’s hon. patron, Dr. George Walker, will speak, This will be followed by the grand parade of all stock and machinery.
