ROTORUA, This Day
” Sir Julien Cahn’s touring cricket team had to fight doggedly yesterday to avert a loss on the first innings against the Bay of Plenty in a oneday game played under ideal conditions.
The home side won the toss, and gave an attractive display in compiling 233, which, in contrast to the display of the Englishmen, was secured at a fast-scoring rate. “v The visitors lost eight wickets 'for 1-26.
There were sensations in the early part of the Englishmen's v innings, when Sir Julien Cahn was ... dismissed with the score at one, and Dyson went with only two . added. V. Jackson was out with the total at 18, while Smith dismissed Oldfield with the score at 21. Smith had then taken three wickets for 11 runs. After these reverses the Englishr men became more cautious, Mudge playing a sound but patient game. C With the total at 55, the game was iin a serious position for the visitors, ,nnd Dempster was sent in in an effort to stop the rot. He did not get going, however, being trapped leg-before by Barlow after he had scored only two. For ..the remainder of the afternoon the English batsmen provided a very drab exhibition in the face of steady .bowling; and it was not until the final 'Over, when Walsh opened out to Len'drum, and, as a result, lost his wicket, jithat there was anything of an exciting nature.
