Ewes Walk Into Hot Ashes: 30 Killed
[Special zo ‘'Northern Advocate ”] TAUMARUNUI, This Day. When about 100 ewes walked on to an extensive bed of hot ashes, which had been spread about one inch in depth over a portion of a yard, it was found necessary to kill about 30 of
the sheep. Yesterday a mob of 138 ewes was brought by rail from Te Kuiti to the
Taumarunui sale. While the sheep were being driven from the railway yards to the sale, they strayed through an open gateway at Winstone's brick and tile works.
Mcst of the sheep, as soon as they felt their feet burning, sat down in the ashes, and this made matters worse.
