Fast Times at Amateur Athletic Meeting

Several good performances were recorded at last night’s usual meeting of the Whangarei Amateur Athletic Club. The High School ground was in good order and fast times were returned in both the 220yds. and the half-mile.

In the javelin championship. Dyer won with an excellent throw of 104 ft. Sins. This boy is a good all-rounder, and his win in the javelin event was a popular victory. Mortimore also threw well, though he was by no means up to Dyer’s form Carter, a new member of the club, was victorious in the 220 yards event. He ran well over the last part of the journey to record 23 1-5 seconds. After 100 yards had been covered, Redwood, Thomas, Dale, Sykes and Mortimore were in front, in that order. Run at a .fast, pace, the-T half-mile resulted in some tight tussles. From the

gun, the limit men. with 120 yards off the back-markers, Freer, Dyer and Fhilpott, set out at a brisk pace, but they were soon picked up by Redwood, Mortimore, Alach and Carter, who led in that order at the end of the first lap. Entering the second lap, Calder came through at speed, and got a good break on the field, until Carter started his sprint, and a duel up the home straight x'esulted, Carter being victorious.

Running a fast second lap, Freer went through the field down the back straight, and unsuccessfully challenged Bowyer for third position. Freer returned the good time of 2.5 2-5, from scratch.

Results were as follows:—

220 Yards: Carter, 17yds., 1; forward, 15yds., 2; Redwood, 29yds., 3; Grant, scr., 4. Time: 23 1-5 Won by a yard, the next three being bunched.

Javelin Championship: Dyer, 104 ft. 3ins., 1; Mortimore, 85ft.. 2; Quinlan, 61ft. 4ins., 3. 880 Yards; Carter, 80yds., 1: Calder, 60yds., 2; Bowyer, 80yds., 3; Freer, scr., 4; Dyer, scr., 5; Bell, 80yds., 6. Time: 2.3 2-5. Won by three yards; ten yards between second and third.
