Cahn’s Team At Palmerston N.

Cricket

IPer Tress Association, COpyriy'hi.} PALMERSTON NORTH, This Day. A two-days’ cricket match against the Wellington minor associations’ team was commenced by Sir Julien Cahn’s side at the Palmerston North sports ground yesterday, and when stumps were drawn, the visitors, in reply to the home team’s first innings’ total of 206, had lost four wickets for 162. The day was overcast and there was a fairly strong cross wind. The wicket was in good order, but not fast enough to assist the fast bowlers Lush, Watts and Pritchard. Walsh, the left-hand spin bowler, who broke the great partnership of Evans and Murchison, went on to take eight wickets for 37. The associations’ team had first use of the wicket, and Robertson, Evans and Murchison played the bowling with confidence, scoring at a very fast rate. The first 50 was hoisted in 28 minutes, and the century in 63 minutes. With Evans and Murchison well set. a substantial score seemed possible, but Walsh, with a wicket to suit him, soon put a different complexion on the game. He was mainly responsible for dismissing the side for a small total. The visitors commenced their innings just after 3 o’clock, but they were not enterprising. Mudge started well, but soon snicked Pritchard into the slips for Gallichan to take the catch. Two ‘more wickets fell quickly, but Hardstaff and Oldfield, and then Hardstaff. and Phillipson, batted soundly, to establish the team in a strong position at stumps.
