Brass Bands Championship
[Per Press Association. copyright.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The first B grade test selection at the New Zealand championship band contest was held last night, after which three bands were singled out as the best of the evening. These were Ashburton Silver, Christchurch Municipal, and Dannevirke Municipal. Stage-struck Players. Overcome by stage fright, four bandsmen,withdrew after getting halfway through “Silver Threads Among the Gold” (Rirnmer), which was the test piece for E Flat soprano cornets. The detailed Results were; A. W. Webb (Kaikorai), 92 points, 1; D. G. Taylor (Timaru Municipal), 90, 2; R. Thomas (Ashburton Silver), 86, 3.
Mr James Dixon judged the E Flat or EE Flat bass solo. The detailed results were: V. Abraham (Timaru Municipal), 92 points, 1; L. Jacobs (Wellington Boys’ Institute), 89, 2; J. B. Cowlishaw (Palmerston North Garrison), 86, 3. Captain Shugg judged the euphonium solo contest. The results were: H. Guthrie (Palmerston North Garrison), 92 points, 1; J. Smith (Port Nicholson Silver), 90, 2; H. Dephoff (Timaru Municipal)* 88, 3. The points awarded the Ashburton Silver Band in the hymn test were 47, not 74, as reported.
