Mangonui Calf Pool Endorses Policy

Although some difficulty had been experienced in launching the Mangonui County Bobby Calf Pool, it was now in good running order, commented Mr E. K. Bird, presiding at the annual meeting of the pool recently. Arrangements had been made with carriers, and a system of zoning adopted, he said. The carriers had entered into the arrangement in good spirit.

Once the pool was established, he continued, it was a comparatively easy matter to enforce regulations concerning light weight and weak calves, and to eliminate abuses common previously. Payment had been decided oh not by direct gate payment, but by arrangement with the monthly cream cheque.

“I am convinced that it is essential in the interests of producers that a large proportion of New Zealand’s total yield of calves must be handled and marketed co-operatively,” said Mr Bird. Whether this should be done by the P.M.A. or the dairy industry, is a question for further investigation. Many of the subversive influences which were a disgrace to the butter-marketing system a short time ago, are now in operation in the bobby calf business. However, there appears to be a safeguard in preparation by the Government which through the Internal Marketing Division is keeping a watchful eye on proceedings. Discussion took place on various matters concerning all aspects of the pool’s operations, and the following committee was elected for the ensuing year;—Messrs. E. R. Bird, A. Maria, Frew, H. Sanders, and H. Parker.
