Flooding Follows Drought Conditions In Northland Areas

rpWO DAYS’ STEADY RAIN IN NORTHLAND HAS RESULTED IN FLOODS ON VARIOUS ROADS T HROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT. SLIPS ON THE BRYNDERWYN DEVIATION HAVE COMPLETELY BLOCKED THAT ROUTE.

Four inches of rain fell on Sunday afternoon and evening, and between 9 o’clock yesterday morning and the same time this morning another 3.95 in were recorded.

So far this month, 8.46 inches have fallen. Highest January figure was in 1926, when 10.65 inches fell,- and in 1937, when 10.64 inches were recorded

In 1925, the lowest rainfall, .92 inches, was recorded,

Waiorahia Overflows Heavy rain for about two hours last night resulted ih‘the Waiorahia stream overflowing its banks in some places. Cafler’s Pool floodgates .were opened, but the rush of water was too great, and the surrounding lawns were covered with water. This morning, however, the water was confined to the stream banks. Large quanities Of rubbish, including logs and branches of trees, are deposited in Central Park, but the stream is being watched, and most rubbish is being sent oh its downward path when it shows signs of blocking or impeding the flow, of the creek. When it appeared evident that flooding might occur, precautions were taken at the different parts of the. stream, particularly at the Whangarei Dairy factory, where flooding in the past has,"wrought excessive damage. However,'-feafs were quelled whep the rain eased off later in the night. Rain TO-flay I This morning fresh showers occurred, and steady rain set in shortly after 9 o’clock. No delays have occurred on the railway services through flooding, although in a mail car caused aliold up at Waiotira.
