Drink No Excuse For Crime
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”l AUCKLAND, This Day.
At the Auckland Supreme Court to-day, after having asked for and obtained an interpreter, a Maori lad, Robin Allen, aged 19, remanded from Kaitaia for sentence on a charge of attempted rape, addressed the Judge in good English to plead that the offence had been committed while he was under the influence of drink. His Honour said that the reports indicated that this was so, and that the prisoner’s conduct previously had been good. Despite the fact that the probation officer recommended probation. he could not acquiesce in the granting of probation for this class of offence. The prisoner was sentenced to two years’ reformative treatment.
