Slip Is BrainPuzzler For Engineers

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. “The job has been a brain-puzzler for the engineers ever since they struck it,” said the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, referring yesterday to the discovery that the blue slip on the South Island main trunk railway, 40 miles from Kaikoura, has shown, further signs of movement.

“We had an idea that the difficult side of that job was over,” Mr Semple added, “but these new indications that more country is coming away are giving us some concern.

“I propose to go and have a look at it as soon as I can with the chi'ef engineer, Mr Wood, and see what remedial steps we can take to prevent the movement from continuing.”

One of the greatest troubles was that a deviation could not be undertaken, Mr Semple said. If the slip could have been dodged they would have done so long ago.
