University Bursaries. The list has been anhounced by the ; Education Department of candidates in the University Entrance Scholarship examination who qualified for the award of University National Ordinary Bursaries, and who are eligible to apply for boarding bursaries. Of the 160 candidates who qualified for bursaries throughout New Zealand, 51 were from the Auckland Province. Power Station Victim’s Inquest. An inquest into the death of Mr H. C. Young, of Hikurangi, wh& was electrocuted at the Mareretu substation of the North Auckland Electric Power Board on Friday, was opened before Mr G. H. Morrish, District Coroner, on Saturday afternoon. After formal identification of the body and a doctor’s statement of the nature of deceased’s burns, the inquest was adjourned. Mr Young died in the Whangarei District Hospital following his injuries at the sub-station. .

Waterless Humour. Sense of humour enables people to withstand many inconveniences. Although residents of Kamo had been obliged all last week to economise with water secured from a community well, they took their troubles philosophically, and even joked about them. Housewives appeared amused when relating stories of husbands digging into long-discarded wells in search of the precious liquid, and of trips to town friends for a cherished bath. Mishap on Rawhiti Road Construction. While rolling half-ton concrete culvert pipes down a hillside on Friday, Mr P. Osman, a Public Works employee working on the new Rawhiti Road construction, had a narrow escape from serious injury. Mr Osman, w ho?e age is 62, and whose home is at Heiensville, slipped, and the concrete pipe rolled right over him, breaking his right arm above the elbow. He was brought to Russell, where his arm was set by Dr. Eva Hill, who finally ordered the patient to Kawakawa Hospital.

Capital Increases.

The capital of the following Northland company has increased, as follows: Paine Bros. (North Auckland, Ltd.): Capital increased to £7OOO by creation of additional capital of £2OOO in shares of £1 each.

Cattle Trespassing on Crown Lands. For permitting cattle to. trespass on the marram planted Crown lands on the west coast sand dunes, kauri, the following, fines were imposed by Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court, Kaitaia, on Friday: Alfred George Bell, 10/- and costs 10/-; T. J. Fleming, £1; J. H. Reid, 30/-; A. W. Masters, 10/- and costs 10/-. «

Regatta Cancelled. Owing to the inclement weather, the Whangarei Cruising Club’s regatta ha? been cancelled. It was to have commenced this morning, but the continuation of overnight rain caused the club committee to postpone the fixture, after conferring with the competitors and visiting Onerahi,. The commodore, Mr A. McKenzie, stated this morning that the regatta would probably be held in about a fortnight’s time. The regatta dance at Onerahi will be held as advertised this evening.

Fog and Whales at Whananaki. Befogged off Whananaki Heads, a party aboard Mr Stockley’s launch spent Saturday night at sea. Returning from a fishing trip, visibility became so restricted that there was no other course open but to anchor. It was not until about 6 o’clock the following morning that the mist lifted sufficiently for the harbour to be negotiated in safety.
