Year May Be One Of Intense Trouble

—SIR ERNEST DAVIS

[Special to “Northern Advocate”! AUCKLAND. This Day. "The portents at present fill me with apprehension for the future —the coming year may be one of intense trouble,” stated the Mayor. Sir Ernest Davis, addressing members of the Auckland City Council, prior to the commencehaent of business last evening.

Sir Ernest said he was not satisfied that the citizens were doing, or attempting to do, enough to protect themselves. Democracy should be more self-reliant. The work of defence should not be left to a small section. “I do not feel alarm, only a sense of responsibility,” continued the Mayor. “I think I shall call a meeting of mayors in the Auckland area, to consider some scheme whereby we can protect ourselves if trouble comes. The position is very, very serious.”
