[Svedal to “Northern Advocate "j WELLINGTON, This Day.
Thomas Geo. Hannam, aged 26, of Palmerston North, was sent yesterday to gaol for nine months with hard labour on a charge of negligent driving, causing bodily injury. Mr Justice Ostler, who presided over the court, issued a sharp warning against reckless driving. “A terrible toll of life is being taken on our roads,” he said to the prisoner, “mostly caused by men like you with no sense of civil responsibilities, no regard for the rights of others and no realisation that every man in a democracy besides rights, has duties to his fellow men as well as to the State.” , “For years the Press has rung with warnings of .danger, but With regard to you they have fallen on deaf ears. “In this case your recklessness caused serious injury and you were indeed fortunate it did not cause loss of life.
