Breach Of Hotel Workers’ Award
John Hay, licensee of the Kawakawa Hotel, was fined £3 for breaches of the domestic workers’ award when he appeared before Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., in the Kawakawa Court. He was charged by the assistantinspector, of factories, Mr, G. A. C. Adler, with having employed a cook at the hotel at less than award rates, and with having worked the employee concerned for more than four hours on her half-holiday. The magistrate, in entering convictions, imposed a fine of £2 on the first charge and £ 1 on the second, and ordered payment of 9/- costs. Lenient Treatment. In view of the isolated nature of the hotel and the difficulty of employment conditions, he had made the penalty a light one, said Mr Morris. Such lenient treatment, however, could not be expected in the case of future proscutions.
Mr Chamberlain had a conversation on the subject of refugees from Germany with Earl Winterton, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, who would be in a position to inform Mr Chamberlain of the proceedings at the recent meeting of the vice-chairman’s refugee committee in Paris. « * $ $ The additional defence estimates for Canada reveal that the Pacific Fleet will be raised from four destroyers to six with the addition of a flotilla leader.
