Amateur Swimming Race Results

The Whangarei Amateur Swimming Club’s tenth club night was held at the school baths on Tuesday night. Fine weather induced a good muster of competitors and a fair gathering of

onlookers. Results of the races were:—

Junior boys’ 50yds: B. Reid (,8s), 1; O. Haigh (scr), 2, W. Wilson (10s), 3. These were the only starters. Won by two feet, with the third boy three feet back. Time, 42 l-ss. Intermediate girls’ 50yds: Miss V. Anderson (scr), 1; Miss A. Stewart (scr), 2; Miss L. Anderson (3s), 3. Also started: Miss D. Randall (3s). Won by a foot, third girl two feet further back. Time, 37 l-ss.

Intermediate boys’ 66 2-3yds: L Mortimore (scr), 1; D. Redwood (7s), 2. Only starters. Won by 18 inches. Time, 41 4-ss.

Won by Inches.

Men’s 66 2-3yds: J. Richards (6s), 1; K. Provan (4s) and R. Hayes (4s), equal, 2. Also started: C. Bevington (scr), R. Smith (3s), F. Collins (4s). Won by six inches in a very close finish, last man only four feet away. Time, 435.

Men’s 220yds—First heat: D. Haigh (12s), 1; D. Fairley (scr), 2; M. Alach (11s), 3. Also started: L. Vincent (18s), R. Horner (235), L. Stockwell (245). Time: 2m 54 l-ss. Second heat: R. Nicholls (225), 1; A. Larcombe (13s), 2; H. Fidler (11s), 3. Also started: D. Goodison (11s), R. Webb (13s), J. Howie (13s). Time, 3m Bs. Final: D. Fairley, 1; R. Nicholls, 2; H. Fidler, 3. Time, 2m 535. In an interesting battle over the last 20 yards the limit man, Nicholls, just failed to hold off Fairley, swimming from scratch, who took the decision by inches. Fidler was in the hunt all the way, finishing four feet further back.
