Finger Folk
The forefinger boasted, ‘/I come number one, Tm wanted whenever there’s work to be done, I help fasten buttons, and tie useful knots, And hold all the handles of kettles and pots. I push and I waggle, I point and I poke, I’m the most important of all finger folk.” “Well, |'m in the middle,” said proud number two, “And help you, I’m certain in half that you do. I’m as strong as a pillar, and stouter than you; I’m really the tallest and best of the crew.” . “You’re too fond of boasting,” remarked number three, “You’ve blown your own trumpets; now listen to me. I’m long and I’m slender, and wear a gold ring; . , , I’m queen of the fingers, whoever is king.” i “I’m not very busy,” confessed number four, “And often wish people would value, me more. But sometimes I’m wanted to help all you three, % Don’t turn up your noses at poor little me!” The thumb condescended at last to reply, “You’re all talking nonsense. Who’s
greater than I? And what does it matter who’s short and who’s tall, When I am your master and emperor of all?”
