Minister’s Speech At Conference Opening
In the latter part of his address when the conference opened yesterday r .. Mr, Nash said:—It : Vitas'impossible in New Zealand or elsewhere, to have a standard of living other than that based on commodities and services produced. If New Zealand were to reduce her imports and still’enjoy her present standard of livings she must make some arrangement to manufacture in the Dominion and produce more than in the tpapilboth primary and secondary, for the purpose of building up funds. Manufacturers had a case in that therje were men, women and youths not ifully employed.. Manufacturers wbiild have the maximum facilities offered for the import of commodities necessary for the production of goods.
First of all, the selection would apply to facilities for primary producand'iheh capital equipment, and fop manufacturing goods to ijsplace imports.
There would be a curtailment of less essential and non-essential imports.
