Petrol Fire In Sunken Ship
(Received 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, January 25. Hopes of raising this week the steamer Kakariki, which sank in the Port Phillip fairway two years ago, after a collision, was postponed by a curious mishap to-day. The Kakariki, only the funnel and masts of which are showing above the water, was ready for raising last Friday, after six months’ work under water, patching and pumping. When petrol was being poured into a pumping engine inside the ship, it took fire, and for an hour the funnel top spouted flames and smoke. There will be a further delay while the engine is removed through the funnel for repairs.
