Waipu Pioneer Laid To Rest
Mr Donald McKenzie, 82-year-old Waipu pioneer, was laid to rest on Wednesday in the Pioneers’ Cemetery, close to the river bar, across which his father and the other early settlers made their way to found the I Scottish settlement that has made history for New Zealand, j A large and representative gathering assembled to pay their last tributes to Mr McKenzie, and about 70 cars formed the cortege to the graveside. Mourners came from as far north as Okaihau, and fi’om as far south tas j Palmerston North. Mr J. J. Finlayson, first male white child born at Waipu, was also in attendance, and the Whangarei County Council and Waipu Caledonian Society were represented. The service at the graveside was performed by the Rev. McFarlane, of j W aipu. j
