Smith’s Double In Amateur Athletics
In his second .appearance on the '"'local track this season, A. R. Smith took the major honours at last evening’s weekly meeting of the Whangarei Amateur Athletic Club. Running easily, 'he carried off first place for both the 100 yards sprint .and the 10*00 yards long distance events. Held on the High School sports ground, the meeting attracted a full attendance' of competitors, together with a number of spectators.
Sprint Event.
Results were: — 120 Yards Handicap.—First heat: A. Stanton (10yds) 1, L. Wilkinson (13 yds) 2, R. Barber (scr) 3. Second heat: G. Runciman (13yds) 1, L. Keys (13yds) 2, H. Sykes (13yds) 3. Third heat: A. R. Smith (10yds) 1, S. Clarke (13yds) 2, N. Dyer 3. Fourth - heat: Jim Calder (Byds) 1, W. Ross (9yds) 2, Redwood (17yds) 3. Final: Smith 1, Wilkinson 2, Stanton 3, The field rose Smartly at the pistol and at the halfway mark Wilkinson was showing the way with the rest bunching rapidly. Smith, moving easily, ran to the front nearing the tape to win comfortably from Wilkinson, who was inches in front of Stanton, who in turn edged out Calder for third place. Led Over 300 Yards. 1000 Yards Handicap.—A. R. Smith 80yds) 1, A. Bevington (110yds) 2, Redwood (160yds) 3, J. Mcllroy 4, Bell (110yds) 5, N. Dyer (10yds) 6. Points are now awarded for the first six places in distance events. The field got under way rapidly and M. Mcßeth was first to show out, but Redwood soon ran through to the • front, with Mortimore and Bateman in hot pursuit. At the end of the first lap, Bateman took command from Redwood, Mc- . Beth and Calder. •'g With 300 yards to go, Smith raced ■ to the front and went on to win easily -‘from Bevington, who finished very fast to displace Redwood. Field Events. ; Long Jump.—S.
