Lord Baden-Powell, the Chief Scout, whose absence from the big Jamboree which opened in Australia today was much regretted, is one of the Empire’s notable figures. Born in 1857, Lord Baden-Powell joined the 13th Hussars, and served in India, Afghanistan, Zululand and Matabeleland, and was promoted to the sth Dragoons. He did a considerable amount of secret service work. He came into the limelight with the defence of Mafeking, after which he organised the South African Constabulary and commanded the Northumbrian Division. He retired in 1910. In 1908 he made his name immortal by founding the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movements, the objects to promote good citizenship. He holds decorations from sixteen different countries.
