Missing Word Competition
Whilst there were scores and scores of entries for the Missing Word competition arranged some time ago in the “Young Northlander,” only one competitor—Rhoda Johnstone—succeeded jn obtaining the entirely correct solution. Net that the standard of work was low, either. On the contrary, Young Ncrthlanders were exceptionally clever in correctly fitting in so many of the missing words. Sometimes in competitions of this kind we are inclined to be lenient and allow as substitutes words similar to tlxe ones in the original. Today that was quite impossible because there were many with ,one mistake, literally dozens with two mistakes, and those with three errors were legion. We simply had to keep to the original solution, though some of the words substituted were most applicable. However, we’ve made amends with an extra long honours list; The cash prize went to:— EHOBA JOHNSTONE, c/o Bisset and Croft, Whakapara. Age 15.
