Truck Rolls Over Man, Who Escapes
A man escaped practically unhurt when a wrecked truck rolled over him on Saturday afternoon.
He was Mr S. G. Bignell, of Whangarei, who was salvaging a vehicle which left the road just beyond the highest point on the Bryderwyn deviation a week ago and rolled to the bottom of a sheer slope.
The slope, more than 50 feet high, was at the point of a big filling in the new highway.
The wrecked truck belonged to a Public Works contractor, Mr Wilson.
Haulage Gear Gives Way.
It was being hauled back to the roadway by means of another truck, and was within a few feet of the top of the bank when a stump upon which the haulage gear was fixed gave way, causing a chain to snap.
With Mr Bignell in the cab, the wreck broke away and went to the bottom of the hill for the second time.
Mr Bignell jumped clear, but failed to gain a foothold on the loose surface, and also rolled to the bottom.
The truck caught him up and rolled right over him, but he escaped with little more than heavy bruises and sundry cuts.
