Opuawhanga

There was a very good attendance at the December meeting of the Opua-1 whanga Women's Institute held in the hall. Mrs Whatmough presided. After the minutes had been read and passed, j the general business was attended to. ' The Roll Call of “My earliest recollec- j tion,” was very well responded to by | all present. j The sultana cake competition was 1 won by Mrs F. Huwiler, with Mrs { S. Nankerville second. j Lunch and afternoon tea provided j by the members was enjoyed by all, l with Mrs. S. Nankerville as hostess. j

Matapouri

The Matapouri Institute held its monthly meeting on December 14. The attendance was very good and every member worked with zest, in arranging the Christmas tree for the children of the district. A discusion concerning the final design of the banner was quite an important part of the programme. The competition for the month, a Christmas present, costing not more than 1/-, was won by Miss Mason, with a cushion cover. A proverb competition during the afternoon was won by Mrs Watson. Mrs Morrison and Miss Knapp were hostesses.

Mangapai The December meeting of the Mangapai Institute was held in the hall, the attendance being fair. Mrs Price reporfed on the garden fete and Miss E. Gulbransen read an account of the federation meeting held in Whangarei. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames McConnell, Ormandy and Walters, The competition for a cloth made by Miss Holmes, was won by Mrs Schofield, of Portland.

Hakaru

There was a very large attendance at the Hakaru institute meeting, which was held a week before the usual date on account of the approach of Christmas. Members stood silently in respect for the late Miss Ryan, who recently passed away. The major portion of the afternoon | was spent in arranging for the coming birthday party, and the compiling of the programme. Many, entries were received for the competition for a Christmas cake. The first prize was won by Mrs Franich, while the second prize cake was made ,by lyiiss Gwen Bowmar. The hostesses were Miss C. Bowmar and Misses Josephine and Gwen Bowmar.

Whangarei

The December meeting of the Whangarei. Centre was celebrated by a picnic at Onerahi, to the members journeyed by bus. The weather was beautifully fine and lunch and afternoon tea were partaken of under the .shade of the trees. Much laughter and amusement was caused by the competitions. Mrs Breeze won the “doll dressing” competition. Mrs Gillibrand was first and Mrs Calder second in the whistling competition. The Song title competition was won by Mrs Hirtzel and Mrs Calder.- All members expressed the opinion they had spent a very pleasant day. '

Maungaturofco 1 Last Saturday afternoon the Maunga- j turoto Women's Institute entertained] about 50 children to a jolly Christmas I Party. The children had a great time j in the paddock near by, playing games j and later adjourning to the Masonic; Hall, where a party tea was arranged, i The children were given party caps, i bags of lollies, balloons and all that j goes to delight the hearts of boys and girls. The party was brought to a I close at 4 o’clock and the little guests ; departed quite thrilled with the ■ Christmas Party. Tangiteroria

The December meeting of the Tangi- j teroria Institute was more or less an. informal one. as it is at this meeting every year that the members celebrate the Institute birthday, although a dance later completes the “celebrations.” After the aspirations and thought for the month had been read, the president welcomed a visitor, Mrs ‘ Street, from. Warkworth, and a new: member, Mrs Horribin. Business was speedily dealt with, and a hearty vote of thanks given to the president. Mrs Hamlin, for her work in connection with the forthcoming Christmas Party for the children. Each member then entertained the company with | songs, play readings, titbits from books, humorous incidents and compe- j titions, all. of which were greatly en- \

joyed. Then followed the luncheon interlude, a special birthday lunch being served. The birthday cake was served by the hostesses, Mrs C. Clarke and Mrs H. Mansell.

Tauraroa The Tauraroa Women’s Institute held its last meeting of the year in the form of a garden fete at the residence of Mrs A. S. McCullough. It was an ideal afternoon. The president, Mrs Standring and Mrs McCullough welcomed the visitors. The needlework and produce stalls were well patronised and did a' brisk trade. Mrs Robertson donated an iced Christmas cake, the proceeds to go to the funds. Mrs B. Brown, Tauraroa, was the lucky winner of the ladies’ bed jacket, and the nail driving competition was won by Miss M. Russek. Tenniquoit was very popular during

the afternoon. The school children gave a very pleasing item during afternoon tea interval.

Mangonui Mrs Bright, of the Mangonui Hotel, is visiting Auckland. Mr and Mrs T. McEvoy were visitors to Mangonui during the week-end. Mrs W. Tinsley, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs W. A. Wilton, has left on a tour to Rotorua and the Waikato, before returning to Sydney. She was accompanied by her niece, Mliss D. Wilton.
