Maori Canoe Found At Whatuwhiwhi

Recently workmen engaged in road formation at Whatuwhiwhi, near Lake Ohia, discovered, while making an excavation preparatory to the const ruction of a culvert, an old Maori canoe. The canoe was buried in. silt and has been very difficult to uncover;. On inquiry it was learned that so far only a portion is exposed and as yet it is impossible to sa y what the dimensions are. The local Maoris are unable to throw any light on the canoe’s existence, of which they were in complete ignorance till chance brought it to light. An endeavour is being made to remove the canoe without damage, but it would seem that the find is of sufficient importance to justify the presence of an expert in Maori relies.
